UC s Female Medical Pioneers Featured in National Exhibit

Jane Henney, MD, University of Cincinnati senior vice president and provost for health affairs, will be the featured speaker at a special reception honoring the nation’s female pioneers in medicine. The private reception, which takes place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at the Public Library  of Cincinnati and Hamilton County downtown, opens the national exhibit, “Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians.”  The exhibit, which runs from Jan. 5 through Feb. 16, is cosponsored by the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County and by the University of Cincinnati’s Academic Health Center Information & Technology Libraries and University Libraries.

The exhibit details the stories of American women from nearly two centuries of medicine —the challenges they have faced and the impact they have had on a profession once considered “unsuitable” for women.

Five women with ties to Cincinnati are represented in the exhibit, including Henney, a 20-year veteran of public health policy. Henney is considered one of the nation’s most distinguished female physicians and was appointed the first female commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1998. She served in that capacity until January 2001.
