SEMESTER CONVERSION UPDATE: Advisor Training and IAP Process

The first day of the University of Cincinnati’s new semester calendar – Aug. 27, 2012 – is a little over a year away. 

IAP TRAINING FOR ADVISORS

And from September 2011 through August 2012, University of Cincinnati advisors will work with semester conversion transition students to create an

Individual Advising Plan

(IAP) for each of these students in a degree-granting program.

Throughout the current summer, advisors are receiving training related to the IAP.

The IAP process will take place in five steps:

1. Student completes “Verify My Major” via OneStop, a 30-second step. (Required since timely degree completion in that major is the goal of the IAP.)
2. Each IAP is created by the appropriate advisor and approved by the program head.
3. Student is notified via e-mail that his/her “IAP is ready to view” on OneStop.
4. Student can electronically approve IAP or schedule a meeting with his/her advisor.
5. IAP is finalized.

. By following the plan, transition students will be able to graduate on time. It’s estimated that UC will create 30,000 transition student IAPs.

STUDENTS: COMPLETE COURSE SEQUENCES

After visiting and completing the “

Verify My Major

” option at OneStop, the most important thing conversion transition students can do now in order to prepare for semester conversion is to meet regularly with their academic advisors and stay on track for course-sequence completion and graduation.

Course sequences are two or three courses that are intended to be taken together in order to fulfill a degree or program requirement. These courses are meant to be taken in a specific order, as the earlier courses are generally prerequisites for later courses. If possible, a course sequence begun on the quarter system should be completed on the quarter system.

Examples include

• Spanish I, II, III (15SPAN101, 15SPAN102, 15SPAN103)
• College Algebra I, II (15MATH173, 15MATH174)
  

And students planning to repeat a quarter course in order to take advantage of UC’s grade-replacement policy should seek to repeat that quarter course before the conversion to semesters.

On semesters, co-op cycles will depend on a student’s academic program. Some programs will offer a single cycle of co-op sessions and classes, while others will offer two alternating cycles. See

After UC’s conversion to semesters, it’s estimated that the university will offer

• 723 degree-granting undergraduate and graduate programs, minors and certificates that have been comprehensively reviewed in terms of integration with other coursework to effectively and efficiently meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s workforce, industry and community needs.

• 8,981 undergraduate, graduate or dual-level (U/G) courses.
