UC Earns INSIGHT Into Diversity s Excellence In Diversity Award
The University of Cincinnati is among the
inaugural recipients of the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award
from
INSIGHT Into Diversity
magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. As a winner of the HEED award, a national award honoring U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion, the University of Cincinnati will be featured along with the other recipients in
INSIGHT Into Diversity
magazines December issue.
"We are honored to be selected by the
INSIGHT Into Diversity
magazine for the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award, said Mitchel D. Livingston, UC Vice President for Student Affairs and Chief Diversity Officer. This tribute recognizes many members across the depth and breadth of the university who created a five-year diversity plan with a structured system of accountability to ensure its success. Many hands were at the oars of making ours a more diverse, inclusive and caring community.
INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected the University of Cincinnati based on UCs diversity and inclusion initiatives, including all aspects of diversity including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBT community. In particular, UC was selected because of the work of the Presidents Diversity Council to identify specific strategies to enhance the curricular and co-curricular dimensions of diversity throughout the institution.
This comprehensive approach not only has a system of accountability, it is designed to be transparent and accessible to all who care to make their own unique contributions to our community, Livingston said.
Among the programs highlighted in materials submitted to INSIGHT Into Diversity were descriptions of the STEER Mentoring Program created in collaboration with Procter & Gamble and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, the creation of UCs LGBTQ Center, the success of the Annual Diversity Conference, UCs Diversity Incentive Grants, and enhancements to UCs supplier diversity program.
We hope the HEED award serves as a reminder that diversity and inclusion must remain priorities in the 21st century higher education landscape. Every college and university should recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion as being part of their everyday life on campus, said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. Our students of today are the employees of tomorrow and the future of our country. As students begin to enter the workforce and a global society, they must first be surrounded by and supported by faculty and staff that understand the differences among cultures and their needs.
