Walk It Wednesdays with Campus Recreation
Walking is a workout that can be done anywhere, which is why its a great way to get started on the path to wellness. Join Campus Recreation in building a healthier UC community with a FREE walking program every Wednesday beginning March 25 through Nov. 18, 2015. The program will be held during the lunch hour from noon, ending approximately at 12:45 p.m., and include a light warm-up, 20-30 minute walk, and a cool-down led by a Certified Personal Trainer. Interested participants should meet at the Member Services desk of the Campus Rec Center (Uptown West Campus) or the Fitness Center at CARE/Crawley (Medical Campus) at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesdays, beginning March 25. No registration required. Walk It Wednesday is open to the entire community, so invite co-workers, friends and family. Rain or shine, activities will be planned.
Research shows we obtain the most benefits from walking when walking with purpose, which refers to having a fitness stride vs. a normal walk. The Mayo Clinic describes this with the following recommendations:
- Head held up, looking straight ahead
- Neck, shoulders and back are relaxed, not stiff, but straight
- Swing arms freely with some pumping permitted
- Stomach muscles are slightly flexed to assist the back in being upright
- Find a rhythm and step onto the ground, rolling from heel to toe.
Campus Recreation members enrolled in the Rec Rewards Membership Reimbursement Program can swipe in at the member services desk in order to get the visit counted toward their eight required visits per month. More information on the Rec Rewards program can be found on the UC Employee Membership Reimbursement Program webpage.
