New Photo Book Showcases UC History
President Santa Ono, co-editors Robert A. Flischel and William J. Mulvihill and its primary authors will sign copies of a new book, "The University of Cincinnati: Soaring into Our Third Century," from
4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 28,
at the UC Bookstore inĀ Tangeman University Center.
The book, which is the first major work on UC history since a book on the centennial of cooperative education in 2006, tells the university's varied story in a "coffee table" book format with scores of photos along with text. The primary writers were Kevin Grace, university archivist, and Greg Hand, retired university spokesperson. The work opens with a a preface by UC Bicentennial Honorary Co-Chairs Tom and Marty Humes, a foreword by Otto M. Budig Jr. and H.C. Buck Niehoff (both co-conveners of the Proudly Cincinnati Campaign), and an introduction by President Ono. Mr. and Mrs. Humes played key roles in spearheading the book project. Photos are drawn from the archives, the work of photographer Flischel and the university's Photography and Video Services files.
The volume provides a bridge to UC's upcoming bicentennial in 2019 with sections on the university's academic roots, learning and discovery, pioneering science and health care, creativity and the arts, the spirit of MainStreet, and athletics. An appendix showcases a timeline of UC history.
The book-signing is free and open to the public.
