Classics Professors Win International Honors in Rome

Classics Professors Sharon Stocker and Jack Davis were recently selected as the first-ever University of Cincinnati recipients of the Sciacca Award for their outstanding contribution to art, knowledge and society. The award will be presented this fall at the Vatican in Rome.

Stocker and Davis have spent more than 20 years digging up exceptional archeological finds all over the world, including in Greece and Albania. While in Pylos, Greece, they discovered a European warrior’s grave which contained a bronze sword, gold rings and valuable jewels. They believe that their discovery may highlight the rise of Greece’s advanced civilization — and illustrate the origins of the celebrated days described in Homer’s “Odyssey.”

Research and discoveries like the one in Pylos have earned many accolades and recognition for their work.
