MLK Day Blood Drive
Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Alpha Phi Alpha and Alpha Kappa Alpha are joining together once again for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day blood drive on Monday, Jan. 16. The drive which began nine years ago as a fraternity service project to honor its Brother, Dr. King, has grown into a Cincinnati MLK Day tradition of service and unity.
The drive is scheduled for Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, located downtown at 50 East Freedom Way. All donors will receive a free ticket to the Rosa Parks Experience, a new virtual exhibit commemorating Civil Rights icon Rosa Parks historic demonstration.
Hoxworth Blood Center is proud to partner with the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center for another year to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., said Alecia Lipton, Hoxworth spokesperson. Dr. King once said, 'Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?' Donating blood is an easy way to give back and serve others in our community.
The choice to give blood is an amazing gift of life. Every unit given helps our community directly. Special patient populations, such as severe trauma, major surgery, and diseases like sickle cell or kidney and heart ailments can require large volumes of donated blood. Of more importance, these special populations are often underrepresented among blood donors. Therefore, the needed blood products often fall in short supply. Blood donation through this type of event, and regular donation beyond it, can help save lives, said Dr. Marcus Washington, M.D. of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Appointments for blood donation are strongly encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. Donors can schedule appointments by calling 513-451-0910 or by scheduling online at www.hoxworth.org/groups/mlk.
