Communiversity Instructor Shares How to Detoxify Your Life

With all the additives and preservatives in our food, it’s easy to believe that we live in a toxic world and carry residue of chemicals in our bodies. Sorting through the massive amount of information (or disinformation) about what’s safe and what’s not can be daunting. But fear not: healthcare professional Theresia Marsh shares the knowledge she has gained on her own path to wellness.

Marsh's parents grew up on a farm and instilled in her and her siblings a love for simple, wholesome food. Marsh’s mother cooked nutritious meals, including homemade chicken soup and herbal tea when the kids got sick.

“My father always made sure we had a garden, which we ate out of all summer long,” Marsh said. “Although we kids didn’t really like weeding it, we’re grateful for it now.”

Aside from her parents, Marsh was also inspired to live naturally by the environmentalism of the 1960s and '70s. When she began working in oncology more than 25 years ago, Marsh noticed something strange: whenever she ate in the cafeteria of a hospital, she would get heart palpitations.

“I eventually figured out that I was sensitive to MSG and began avoiding it by bringing lunch to work as much as possible,” Marsh said. “At the same time, I noticed that the more I ate non-processed whole foods, I just felt better. That was some pretty powerful reinforcement.”

Marsh was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia in the early 1990s.

Marsh brings years of experience cutting unnecessary chemicals out of her life to Communiversity in the course How to Detoxify Your Life. During an eye-opening and fun workshop, students can join her as she sifts hard data from the hype to learn simple yet practical steps to begin reducing overall chemical load.

How to Detoxify Your Life

takes place on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on UC’s Victory Parkway campus.

“The greatest benefit to reducing chemicals is that in reducing our overall chemical load, the body is not as stressed and functions in a more natural and holistic way,” Marsh said. “These improvements can often be felt. As they say, one good habit usually leads to another.”
