July 17 | 2-4 p.m. | University Hall 454
Presenter: Dyan Marinos, EdD (c), LPC, CDP
We often engage in discussions around challenging topics without employing the tenets of effective,
intentional, and positive dialogue. This workshop is considered fundamental for enhancing cross-cultural
communication skills; offering tips and strategies to participants for facilitating difficult conversations
around hot button issues. The interactive components of this workshop are designed to enhance (1)
participants understanding of respectful communication (2) the ability to address conflict to avoid
destructive speech and behavior, and (3) skills for encouraging honest dialogue while remaining civil with
classmates and colleagues.
How to Disagree Well: Keeping Both Your Cool and Conviction
July 19 | 12:30-1:30 p.m. | Teachers/Dyer Complex 407
Presenters: Keith Sun & Liz Pawley
In an increasingly polarized and pluralistic society, there will only be more disagreements between
individuals and groups. As a campus, how can we disagree well with others radically different from us?
How can we keep ourselves in a respectable demeanor when we feel our fundamental convictions and
allegiances are violated by others who think differently? Inspired from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s nonviolent
approach to civil disobedience, this session will cover the nature of civil disagreement, the
dysfunction in common disagreement practices, and possible solutions towards constructive disagreement
both as a campus and in society in general.
Creating a Culture of Inclusion
July 23 | 10 a.m. Noon | Langsam Library, Room 462
Facilitated by diversity educator, Dyan Marinos, and Executive Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity & Access, Matt Olovson
This crossover training serves as an introduction to the topic of cultural competence. This interactive workshop provides an overview of university policy, foundational knowledge on microaggressions, and scenario-based learning. Participants can expect to engage in small and large group discussion with opportunities to practice honing their skills to advance a culture of inclusion.
