Get to Know Gabe Hapke, MA (He|Him)
Clinical Psych Trainee
Gabe Hapke, he/him, is a Clinical Psychology Trainee located at the UC CAPS Calhoun location. He is in his third year of his Psyd at Xavier University.
Gabe takes a humanistic, person-centered approach to therapy and enjoys working with clients of a variety anxiety and depressive disorders. He hopes to support clients by collaboratively forming a strong, genuine therapeutic bond that the client can heal through.
Outside of work and school, he is often driving hours away to see his favorite artists in concert, nerding out about anything Star Wars or Marvel, screaming at his TV as he plays video games, or playing the guitar. His favorite bands are blink-182, Big Time Rush, All Time Low, and Holding Absence.
If I wasn’t in this line of work, I would be: A pilot! I’ve always been fascinated with flying and the freedom, simplicity, and sights that come with it.
What I do to take care of myself after a challenging day/time/situation: If it’s been one of those days, I find that flopping on the couch to watch TV or going on a drive and blasting music often does the trick.
Coping skills I recommend to clients that I actually use myself: Grounding techniques, such as reminding myself to be where my feet are at. Whenever I catch my mind wandering into anxious territory, this helps gently snap me back into the present moment, so I don’t miss out on what’s right in front of me.
