A new paradigm in performance coaching

Digital tools allow for greater collaboration between staff and supervisors

It’s no surprise that many supervisors and their employees see the annual performance review process as just another added responsibility on their already full plate. While the performance review period is an opportunity to collaboratively establish goals, clarify expectations, and provide actionable feedback to help identify barriers to success, many see it as a chore to gather a year’s worth of performance data, and documentation.

What if we told you there was a better, more efficient way to capture and identify performance metrics and goals through a standardized, digital tool? What if you had collaborative conversations with your staff and supervisor, empowering people to set goals and outcomes that are important to them and align with the business unit? Sound good? We thought so!

As part of the Next Lives Here strategic direction, the University of Cincinnati is dedicated to implementing innovative solutions to not only support our staff through the performance process, but to reengage them for higher retention and return on investment.

To help us meet our goals of engaging and retaining top talent, we are excited to announce the transformation of staff performance management supported by SuccessFactors Performance module and our new process of Performance Coaching.

Set to rollout university wide in FY 21 for all staff, a pilot of over 800 University staff is kicking off for FY 20 to help further refine the program prior to university wide deployment. Through a collaborative effort between UC leadership, Central HR, the Staff Success Center, and the Business Core Systems team, we have conducted university-wide focus groups, received feedback from surveys, and listened to key concerns from supervisors and staff. Through this rigorous process we found that our staff community desires a standardized, paperless platform that provides greater efficiency in the performance review process. To help meet this need, we have partnered with SAP SuccessFactors to integrate the new Performance module into a talent management system that is already familiar to the university community.

The SuccessFactors Performance module and Performance Coaching process allows staff and supervisors to collaboratively identify and provide coaching feedback on goals in three main areas: Job Specific, Performance, and Development. The goal structure will follow the SMART format to ensure they are specific, motivating & measurable, attainable & aspiring, relevant, and timebound & trackable. Alignment of goals to university and department wide initiatives will help all staff recognize how their efforts contribute to the larger organization, while also ensuring adherence to our three core values of impact, inclusion, and innovation.

To help support this transition, the Central HR Staff Success Center is creating an entire suite of e-learning, micro-learning, and blended learning opportunities to ensure our community has the education necessary to make this initiative a resounding success.

All staff are welcome to take advantage of these new educational opportunities, currently available in SuccessFactors Learning.  Additional communications will be sent throughout the year regarding this new Performance Coaching process and the types of education and support you can expect to ensure you have the knowledge you need to successfully transition.
