My #UCFirstGen Story: Brittany Rice, A&S ‘22

Brittany Rice is a student in the University of Cincinnati’s College of Arts and Sciences, studying biological sciences and environmental studies. As a first-generation college student, Brittany is the first in her family to attend college.

What is your boldest vision for your future?

I hope to become a physician’s assistant (PA) and move to Europe. UC has prepared me to impact the world because it has provided more resources to be my best self, network with people from all around the globe and grow/learn in every setting. I have joined programs that have put me in leadership positions that I will need in every stage of my life.

Describe a unique experience you’ve had at UC.

Being an ALPHA Ambassador gave me the opportunity to have a mentee, be a mentor, be a leader, and network with donors.

How has the Gen-1/1MPACT House made an impact on your life?

The Gen-1/1MPACT House has given me the greatest support system I could ever ask for. Gen-1 has provided me resources, experiences, friends, family, advice and love. Gen-1 has taught me how to be a leader and a good follower. Gen-1 has shown me how to network as well as the benefits that follow and given me the opportunity to network. Gen-1 has my back and makes sure I stay on track to graduation.

What does it mean to you that you will be the first person in your family to graduate from college?

It means I am breaking a generational curse imposed on many low-income and minority students. I am building a better life for my current family and future family. It means I am being the best version of myself and it proves to myself that I am capable of anything.
