CCM Philharmonia presents a US premiere and a romantic masterwork on Oct. 15

The performance features works by Aya Yoshida and Sergei Rachmaninoff; tickets on sale now

Story by CCM Graduate Student Lucy Evans

The UC College-Conservatory of Music Philharmonia returns for its second concert of the season with “Full Force,” a program featuring a US premiere by Aya Yoshida and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2. The concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022, in CCM’s Corbett Auditorium.

The US premiere of Aya Yoshida’s Double Face is the second collaboration between the award-winning composer and the CCM Philharmonia. Originally from Japan and based in Copenhagen, Yoshida competed in CCM’s Alexander Zemlinsky Prize for Composition in 2019. Double Face, which originally premiered in 2016 by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, won first prize.

Yoshida's first prize award included $30,000 along with a major new orchestral commission for dance. In December 2021, CCM Dance and the CCM Philharmonia presented the world premiere of "Falling Upwards" set to Yoshida's piece Let Me Take You There; watch the performance online

The CCM Philharmonia's October 15 concert also features Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 in E Minor, Op. 27 (1907). One of the towering musical figures of the 20th century, Rachmaninoff did not immediately take to the symphonic form. His Symphony No. 2 represents a triumph of persistence after his first symphony’s poor reception threatened to end his composition career entirely. Among his most-performed works, the second symphony is full of lush, memorable melodies and fervent energy.

CCM Philharmonia presents “Full Force” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Corbett Auditorium. Tickets are on sale through the CCM Box Office. View complete program details below.
