Gabriel Alegría Afro-Peruvian Sextet performs at CCM on Feb. 25
The acclaimed ensemble stops in Cincinnati during its Konectados Tour - tickets on sale now
Story by CCM Graduate Student Lucy Evans
The Gabriel Alegría Afro-Peruvian Sextet performs in CCM’s Corbett Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023 as part of its Konectados Tour 2023. Celebrated for their inventive fusion of traditional Afro-Peruvian music and jazz, the band immerses their audiences in the unique music scene of coastal Peru. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office.
The performance is hosted by the CCM Division of Music Education, and presented in partnership with La Mega Media, with additional support from the Paul Lammermeier Foundation. "The Afro-Peruvian Sextet is writing a new chapter in the history of Latin Jazz," says award-winning jazz critic Doug Ramsey. Considered by many to be the heart of the Afro-Peruvian jazz scene, don’t miss the chance to experience this trailblazing group in Cincinnati.
Founded in 2005 by trumpeter and composer Gabriel Alegría, the Afro-Peruvian Sextet regularly performs throughout their native Peru and the United States. Their signature style — inspired by the African influence in coastal Peruvian music—is characterized by infectious rhythms, complex jazz harmonies, and traditional percussive instruments such as the Cajón, Cajita and Quijada (made from the jawbone of a donkey). In 2015 they were named “Best Ensemble of the Year” by Hot House Magazine and awarded “Best Latin Jazz Album” by the New York City Jazz Record. “The Sextet knows its mission well and has the execution down to a science,” writes The New York Times. That mission goes beyond performing music.
In addition to performing celebrated shows and recording five albums, each member of the group is dedicated to education. Through master classes, workshops, and even cooking with fans, the group aims to welcome a global audience into a joyful and exuberant experience of Afro-Peruvian culture. The group’s members host “Tour Peru,” an immersive experience which invites fans to join them in Lima for an unforgettable week exploring the music, food and history of the Peruvian coast. More information about the Afro-Peruvian Sextet and Tour Peru can be found on their website.
