Prognosis Ohio: The precarious state of medication abortion access in Ohio
UC’s Danielle Bessett speaks to abortion access, including medication abortion, on podcast
University of Cincinnati abortion access researcher Danielle Bessett was a guest speaker on Prognosis Ohio, a podcast hosted by Dan Skinner.
Bessett is an associate professor of sociology and faculty affiliate of both UC’s Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and the Medical Scientist Training Program and member of the Ohio Policy Evaluation Network.
In the podcast Bessett, and Morgan Mitchell of the Abortion Fund of Ohio, discuss the current state of abortion access in Ohio, which has garnered some confusion since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, both say. The guests speak to the dwindling number of abortion providers in Ohio and proposed legislation that has the potential to abolish abortions services here altogether.
Abortion services can be both surgical and medical, meaning a medication abortion of a two-drug regimen.
Almost half of the abortions in the United States are medication abortions, says Mitchell.
“We’ve had decades of use with low rate of death,” from medication abortions says Bessett, adding that medication abortions “causes fewer deaths than Viagra.”
