Hess, Lampkin Named Local Legends

Four distinguished women physicians from Ohio now have one more distinction to add to their impressive resumes: they have been named Local Legends.

The Local Legends program, a partnership between the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) and the National Library of Medicine (NLM), asks U.S. senators and members of Congress to nominate outstanding women physicians from their state or district for this unique honor.  Local Legends is a companion project to an exhibition created by the NLM titled Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America's Women Physicians. The project spotlights these women – their lives, their achievements, their dreams, and the challenges they faced in becoming physicians.

The Local Legends from Ohio are Clara Bloomfield, MD; Evelyn Hess, MD, MACP, MACR; Beatrice Lampkin, MD; and Mary Jo Welker, MD.

The honored Ohio women were officially recognized in February at the AMWA annual meeting in San Diego, California.  A Local Legends Web site (

www.locallegends.org

) will be launched next month, and a DVD created by McNeil–Lehrer Productions for the National Library of Medicine and AMWA will be released next year.
