One is Sewing, the Other Rowing: Sisters Pin Their Olympic Hopes on Teamwork

Cincinnati sisters Kelly and Raegen Salchow are both on pins and needles as the August Olympics in Athens approach. Kelly, rowing on the U.S. women s quadruple sculls team, is a soon-to-retire veteran seeking a medal after barely missing out with a fifth-place finish in the 2000 games. That hoped-for medal would suit Raegen just fine. It's Raegen who put her fashion-design degree to work for her sister, creating a state-of-the-smart unisuit that s more than sew-sew in providing a competitive advantage.

Law Library's Turpening Earns National Recognition

Pat Turpening, the head of Preservation and Archives in the UC College of Law's Marx Law Library, has earned the 2004 Renee D. Chapman Award for Outstanding Contributions in Technical Services Law Librarianship. The award is decided on by the Technical Services Special Interest Section of the American Association of Law Libraries, and will be presented to Turpening next week at the AALL's annual meeting.

Geography's Hinkel Named To Arctic Research Commission

The U.S. Arctic Research Commission has appointed Ken Hinkel, UC professor of geography, to its task force consisting of scientists and engineers charged with identifying key issues and research needs to foster greater understanding of global change impacts on permafrost in the Arctic and their importance to natural and human systems.
