Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Academic Personnel

Matt Serra, Vice Provost for Academic Personnel, oversees all faculty personnel matters, including reappointments, tenure and promotion review, leave, retirement, discipline and grievances. He serves as the University Contract Administrator for the UC/AAUP collective bargaining agreement. In this role he is the university’s chief negotiator with the AAUP and advises and assists faculty members, deans, associate deans, and department heads with matters related to the collective bargaining agreement and the Rules of the Board of Trustees. In addition, he provides leadership in the following areas: part-time faculty affairs, emeriti affairs, decanal reviews and searches, and academic department administrator training. Serra is also the Provost Office’s principal liaison on academic personnel matters to the Office of General Counsel, the Office of Human Resources, the Office of Equal Opportunity, the Title IX Office and the Faculty Senate. 

Before joining UC Serra served as Executive Director of Faculty Personnel Services at Central Michigan University where he also earned his Ed.S. with a focus on higher education administration. He also has a B.S. in history from Michigan State University and a J.D. from Wayne State University.  Prior to entering higher education administration, Serra practiced law for several years, primarily in employment and labor law with an emphasis on educational settings.
