CCMONSTAGE: Watch CCM Wind Symphony's Sept. 13 performance
Students and faculty present a socially-distanced virtual performance in CCM's Corbett Auditorium
The Wind Symphony at UC's College-Conservatory of Music reunites on the Corbett Auditorium stage to present a socially-distanced virtual performance. Led by Director of Wind Studies Kevin Michael Holzman, the concert features works by Kevin Day, Andrea Tarrodi, Samuel Barber, Joaquin Rodrigo and Richard Strauss.
Watch the performance online. The video was recorded and edited by Joel Crawford Recording.
The program begins with Day's Fireworks Fanfare, which won the 2015-16 Dallas Winds Fanfare Contest. As the piece's title suggests, the music is inspired by the excitement of a holiday firework show. CCM graduate student Brendan Boyle conducts the ensemble in Tarrodi's Serenade in Seven Colors — originally commissioned by Västmanlandsmusiken and written for Västerås Sinfonietta's winds and percussion. Complied and arranged for brass ensemble and timpani, Barber's Mutations from Bach is conducted by CCM graduate student Karl Meyers.
The concert then features Rodrigo's Adagio para instrumentos de viento, which was originally commissioned by Robert Boudreau, founder and conductor of the American Wind Symphony Orchestra. The program's finale features Strauss' Fröhliche Werkstatt (Happy Workshop) Sonatina No. 2 in E-flat Major. This piece is known for its technical challenges for each winds player and features the basset horn, a lesser-known instrument of the clarinet family.
Following health and safety precautions, all CCM ensembles have been reduced in size with instrumentalists spaced apart. Additionally, safety shields are placed between many student musicians on stage, with additional bell masks for trumpets and trombones. Although CCM ensembles are currently unable to perform for live, in-person audiences, viewers can still experience the artistry and expertise of our students, alumni and faculty through CCMONSTAGE Online. The college will record and share selected performances throughout the school year to help us stay connected even when we have to temporarily stay apart.
