CCM welcomes Hiram Diaz as Visiting Artist of Euphonium

Diaz will visit campus four times per semester to teach euphonium students

UC College-Conservatory of Music Dean Pete Jutras has announced the appointment of Hiram Diaz as CCM's Visiting Artist of Euphonium for 2026-27. A CCM alumnus (BM Euphonium Performance, 2007), Diaz will visit campus four times each semester to teach the euphonium students in CCM Professor of Tuba and Euphonium Timothy Northcut's studio.

Diaz is a euphoniumist, trombonist, vocalist and music educator based in the Washington, D.C., area. A Cuban American, he grew up in Miami, Florida, surrounded by the Latin-American diaspora and its incredible contributions to the arts.

As a performer, Diaz has played solo and recital performances throughout the United States and abroad. He has been a featured soloist at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, featured frequently at International Tuba and Euphonium Conferences, and with “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band on their National Concert tour. Over the past five years Diaz has worked with the Michigan City Municipal Band to commission and premier several new works for euphonium and concert band by composers such as Kim Archer, Kevin Day, Tom Davoren and Dennis Llinas. In addition to his solo engagements, Diaz is a frequent guest euphonium, trombone or bass trumpet player with such groups as the Baltimore Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony and New York Philharmonic. Beyond brass playing, Diaz leads the Tenor Section at Pohick Church, the home church of President George Washington.

Diaz has taught at every level of music education, including students who have won professional playing positions in the premier military bands of the United States. Diaz has been an invited clinician to several conferences and festivals such as a lecturer at the International Euphonium Tuba Festival and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. He has conducted master classes and been a guest professor at universities around the US.

Diaz is a passionate chamber musician as a member and returning guest with such groups as Barclay Brass, High Bridge Brass, Washington Symphonic Brass, Dominion Brass Quartet and the American Tuba Quartet.

Diaz received his bachelor’s degree from CCM and a master's degree from the University of North Texas. His teachers include Brian Bowman, Tim Northcut, Lee Rogers and Jay Bertolet. Currently, Diaz proudly serves as Assistant Principal Euphoniumist in “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in Washington D.C., a position he has held since 2012.

“I am incredibly excited to be returning to CCM as a visiting artist,” says Diaz, who was mostly recently on campus in Spring 2026 to work with students and perform with the CCM Wind Symphony. Below, watch a CCM Alumni Spotlight video focused on Diaz.

"A distinguished CCM alumnus, Hiram brings an extraordinary level of artistry, leadership and professional distinction back to his alma mater," says Northcut. "This is a huge moment for our students, our studio and the broader euphonium community."

"Hiram Diaz is one of the leading euphonium players in the world, so this is a big deal for CCM," says Jutras. "We are thrilled to be able to offer this specialized instruction to our students, and I am grateful to Tim Northcut and Kevin Holzman, who were both critical in making this happen."
