Village Life Outreach Project brings Tanzania to Cincinnati

The evening will showcase how Village Life’s work in rural Tanzania creates impact that reaches far beyond the communities it serves, giving UC students, young professionals and executives opportunities to develop new skills, broaden their perspectives and bring those experiences home.

For Village Life founder Chris Lewis, MD, a family medicine physician and professor at the UC College of Medicine, the exchange is about more than service.

“Impact flows both ways,” Lewis says. “You don’t have to go to Tanzania to change the world, but when you partner with Village Life, the world changes you, too.”

Proceeds from Night on the Serengeti will support Village Life’s ongoing work in Tanzania, including the continued development of the M. Anne Haire Reproductive and Child Health Center. Named in honor of the late wife of a former Village Life board member, the center is expanding access to quality healthcare for women, children and families while creating opportunities for Cincinnati students and community leaders to engage in global service.

Over the past 22 years, Village Life has connected nearly 100 Cincinnati-based volunteers per year with communities in Tanzania, where they contribute healthcare expertise, educational skills and other professional knowledge. More than 1,000 students and professionals have participated in the organization’s programs, returning to Ohio with a deeper understanding of global communities and new perspectives they can apply to their education, careers and communities.

“Bringing that experience on a global stage back to companies and organizations in Cincinnati allows for broader thinking, new ideas and an understanding of life across continents,” Lewis says.

More than a traditional fundraiser, Night on the Serengeti offers a chance to experience the connections between Cincinnati and Tanzania and see how global engagement can transform both the communities being served and the people doing the work.
