Cincinnati Spotlight features CCM's new Conservatory Series concerts
Faculty members Anna and Pavel Vinnitsky discuss the new series, which debuts on Oct. 21
Cincinnati Public Radio features CCM's new Conservatory Series in its latest "Cincinnati Spotlight." The series launches on Wednesday, Oct. 21 with its inaugural "Grand Tradition" concert featuring a variety of CCM's distinguished faculty artists.
The idea is simple: we wanted to play the greatest music with the greatest musicians.
Anna Vinnitsky, co-director Adjunct Instructor of Piano Performance
Co-directed by Pavel and Anna Vinnitsky, the new Conservatory Series brings together distinguished guest artists, accomplished CCM faculty members and outstanding student performers for concerts that celebrate the collaborative artistry that defines the CCM community. The series presents three concerts throughout the year that feature chamber music masterworks.
Faculty artists featured in the Oct. 21 "Grand Tradition" concert, presented as part of the Conservatory Series.
The first concert is presented at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21, in CCM's Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. It features CCM faculty artists Pavel Vinnitsky, clarinet; Christopher Sales, bassoon; Margaret Tung, horn; Danbi Um, violin; Brian Hong, viola; Benjamin Hughes, cello; Rachel Calin, double bass; and Anna Vinnitsky, piano. The program showcases Brahms's expansive Piano Quartet No. 2 in A Major, Op. 26; and Schubert's monumental Octet in F Major, D. 803.
“CCM has a wonderful reputation as an educational institution, the reason for that is often the success of our students," Pavel Vinnitsky said in his interview with Cincinnati Public Radio. "Our faculty are actually some of the most successful world famous performers outside of CCM.”

The second concert is presented at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 23, in CCM's Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. Titled "Between Folk and Art" the performance features faculty artists collaborating with guest artist David Shifrin, Clarinet Professor at Yale School of Music, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
The CCM faculty artists performing on this concert are Pavel Vinnitsky, clarinet; Titus Underwood, oboe; Martin Garcia, bassoon; Margaret Tung, horn; Gershon Gerchikov, violin; Kenneth Renshaw, violin; Jan Grüning, viola; Ilya Finkelstein, cello; Rachel Calin, double bass; and Anna Vinnitsky, piano.
The Nov. 23 program celebrates the rich musical traditions of Central and Eastern Europe, bringing together works inspired by folk melodies, rhythms and expressive styles. The concert reveals the remarkable ways composers transformed folk influences into chamber music masterpieces. The repertoire includes Zoltán Kodály's Intermezzo for String Trio, Anna Vinnitsky's Klezmer Duets for Two Clarinets, Béla Bartók's Contrasts and Antonín Dvořák's Serenade for Winds in D Minor, Op. 44.
The final concert is presented at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4, in CCM's Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. Titled "Elements of Sound," the program brings together four masterpieces that showcase the brilliance, color and expressive range of chamber music across centuries — W. A. Mozart's Quintet in E-flat Major, K. 452; Leoš Janáček's Mládí, Jean-Féry Rebel's Les Élémens and Francis Poulenc's Sextet.
The concert features guest artists Kenneth Weiss, Professor of Harpsichord at Paris Conservatoire; William Welter, Principal Oboe at Chicago Symphony Orchestra; and Stephen Williamson, Principal Clarinet at Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The faculty artists performing are Sooyun Kim, flute; Pavel Vinnitsky, bass clarinet; Martin Garcia, bassoon; Christopher Sales, bassoon; David Alexander, horn; Benjamin Hughes, cello; Michael Chertock, piano; and Anna Vinnitsky, piano.
