CARRIE: THE MUSICAL
Music by Michael Gore
Lyrics by Dean Pitchford
Book by Lawrence D. Cohen
Based on the novel by Stephen King
A co-production of The Carnegie and CCM
From the twisted imagination of Stephen King comes a tale of terror, power, and teenage rage like no other. CARRIE: THE MUSICAL thrusts you into the world of Carrie White — the shy outsider bullied at school and tormented at home by her fanatically religious mother. But when she discovers a strange new power, the tables turn… and the results are explosive. Fueled by a driving rock score and raw, emotional intensity, this cult classic crackles with fear, fury, and fire — until everything ignites. Bold, bloody, and utterly unforgettable, it’s a night at the theatre you won’t escape unscathed.

LA BOHÈME
Music by Giacomo Puccini
Libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica
Jose Maria Condemi, director
Aik Khai Pung, conductor
Rent is overdue, but passion burns bright among a group of young friends scraping by on talent, wit and borrowed time. Puccini's soaring arias tell the tale of Mimi, Rodolfo, Marcello and Musetta — dreamers adrift in Paris on the cusp of a new century, where the city is literally reinventing itself. As the first Paris Métro trains rumble beneath, ushering in a breathless age of speed and possibility, life in the garrets above remains unchanged: cold, precarious and lit by the fierce glow of youth. A story that transcends time and place, its message is for the artists, the dreamers, and the everyday people who face challenges but never lose sight of love and connection. Sung in Italian with projected English supertitles.

SAME GESTURE, DIFFERENT CENTURY: RETHINKING MODERNIST PERFORMANCE PRACTICE THROUGH THE MICROTIMING OF THE GAVOTTE
Johanna Frymoyer, Assistant Professor of Music Theory Faculty Fellow at the Nanovic Institute for European Studies at University of Notre Dame
When modernist composers adapt Classical dance gestures, how do performers shape the timing of those gestures in practice? Do they rely solely on modernist literalism, or do they intuitively draw upon older, embodied dance habits? To explore this problem, Frymoyer presents a comparative microtiming analysis of recorded performances across four gavotte excerpts in Mozart’s K. 284/iii and K. 466/i, and Schoenberg’s Suite, Op. 25/ii and iii. Using interonset-interval (IOI) deviation graphs and contour maps, she establishes an empirical baseline for the gavotte rhythm in Mozart to evaluate how interpreters navigate phrasing and anacrusis shaping in Schoenberg. Ultimately, she challenges the belief that performance practice is strictly period-bound. She argues that embodied dance gestures create deeply rooted motoric templates that transcend historical, stylistic and notational divides.

RENT
Book, Music and Lyrics by Jonathan Larson
Musical Arrangements by Steve Skinner
Original Concept/ Additional Lyrics by Billy Aronson
Music Supervision and Additional Arrangements by Tim Weil

La Vie Bohème! Based loosely on Puccini's La Bohème, Jonathan Larson's RENT shaped a generation of dreamers and taught us all to measure our life in love. The story follows a year in the life of a group of starving young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. RENT is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Book by Joe Masteroff
Based on the play by John Van Druten and
Stories by Christopher Isherwood
Music by John Kander
Lyrics by Fred Ebb
Rachel Stevens, director
Ian Axness, music director and conductor
Jessica Harris, choreographer
Forget all your troubles and come to the Cabaret, where life is beautiful and the music is always playing. Daring, provocative and exuberantly entertaining, Cabaret explores the dark and heady life of bohemian Berlin in the late 1920s. With the Emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff, a young American writer, is immediately taken with English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. A Tony Award-winning musical, beloved songs include “Willkommen,” “Cabaret,” “Don't Tell Mama” and “Maybe This Time.”

REVISITING “ELOQUENCE” IN THE MUSIC OF J.S. BACH
Karl Braunschweig Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Music at Wayne State University
Recent work on schema theory and partimento practice has profoundly reshaped how we think about harmony and the compositional process in eighteenth-century music and invites us to reconsider how these insights elucidate important aspects of Bach’s signature style, particularly as it relates to earlier ideas about melody and rhetoric. This talk revisits the notion of eloquence as it relates to common schemata and other important characteristics of Bach’s style, including the “continuo polyphony” (Dahlhaus) of the early eighteenth century, a “hierarchical counterpoint” resulting from a historical layering of specific practices. Reconsideration of selected passages from the composer’s instrumental and vocal works from this perspective vividly reveals some of these important practices that together deepen our understanding of his unique aesthetic achievement. These practices include the interaction of distinct compositional layers, expressive melodic lines, and the general shaping of form—hallmarks of Bach’s compositional technique, which we can interpret as a mark of eloquence, as an updated conception of musical rhetoric resonant with eighteenth-century ideas.
