Cincinnati Edition: Access to quality health care can be a struggle for LGBTQ+ patients

A new fellowship at the UC College of Medicine aims to help future doctors become experts in transgender and LGBTQ+ medicine.

The Sawyer Pardo Fellowship Endowment Fund for LGBTQ+ Health will provide funding for expanded training.

Sarah Pickle, MD, a physician with UC Health and an associate professor of Family and Community Medicine at the UC College of Medicine, spoke with Lucy May of WVXU. Sawyer Pardo, a UC Health patient, and his mom, Phoebe Pardo, Clever Crazes for Kids chief operating officer, were also part of the interview.

“For patients who are transgender and seeking care, this is an area where we need many more medical providers with knowledge and expertise in order to provide high-quality, gender-affirming care,” said Pickle. “We know the number of medical students who finish medical school prepared to help patients in their gender journey is really limited. Our fellowship aims to be a part of the solution.”
