As a dual-degree student in CCM's BA in Music program and Lindner's Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program, Gaines has explored both the creative and organizational sides of the performing arts. Gaines is specializing in Operations Management in her BBA studies. Over the summer, she interned at Cincinnati Opera, and she interned at Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra during the fall semester.
"At Cincinnati Opera, I worked as a Finance and Accounting intern, which pushed me far outside my comfort zone," she shared. "I learned so much about the financial side of running an arts nonprofit."
Her current internship with the CSO offers a completely different rhythm. Working in the Artistic Planning Department, Gaines helps coordinate guest artist and conductor logistics while supporting the team's concert preparation. "It's been amazing to see how every detail comes together behind the scenes," she said. "Getting to meet Yo-Yo Ma and then see him perform was one of those moments that made all the hard work worth it."
Balancing music and business studies has given Gaines a unique perspective on arts leadership. "My music background helps me understand the performer's point of view while my business courses taught me organization and project management," she explained. "Through learning about efficient business practices, I've become curious about how those methods can be applied to arts organizations."
Gaines credits several mentors for supporting her journey, including her former cello professor Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir. "She encouraged me to pursue internships event after I decided not to follow a performance career," Gaines said. "Her support helped me realize I would build a career that still connects to my love of music."
Her advice for fellow students is simple: "Be open to every opportunity," she said. "Even if it's not what you see yourself doing long-term, you're still learning, growing and building connections."
As she continues her studies, Gaines exemplifies the flexibility and curiosity that define today's arts leaders, bridging the stage and the boardroom to ensure the performing arts continue to thrive.
About CCM's BA in Music
CCM's Division of General Studies provides students with flexible pathways for the study of music as a cultural and artistic practice through either a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or an Academic Minor program.
The BA in Music culminates in a liberal arts degree, which can be a gateway to careers in music and allied fields, including music promotions, arts administration, music therapy, journalism, ethnomusicology, musicology, music theory, composition, songwriting, commercial music production and library science.
The BA Music curriculum is flexible, and students design their coursework to emphasize particular skill areas or to complete a broader course of study that samples from all areas. Ample electives allow for the possibility to complete double-majors, minors, certificate programs (including pre-law or pre-med coursework) and to participate in study abroad opportunities. These experiences culminate in an individual capstone research project with a CCM faculty member.
