CCM shares fall 2018 calendar of major events

UC’s College-Conservatory of Music presents more than 100 major public performances in fall 2018.

The University of CIncinnati's College-Conservatory of Music presents more than 100 major public performances in fall 2018. The largest single source of performing arts events in Ohio, CCM’s fall performance series runs Sept. 6 through Dec. 16.

Fall semester sees the grand finale of CCM's Bernstein at 100 Festival, which is part of a world-wide celebration of the 100th birthday of influential American composer, conductor, author, lecturer and pianist Leonard Bernstein. CCM’s student and faculty artists will celebrate Bernstein’s monumental career with concerts, film screenings and more — beginning with a joint concert by the CCM Philharmonia and Concert Orchestra on Sept. 14. The Festival concludes on Nov. 4 with a rare performance of Stan Kenton’s West Side Story by the CCM Jazz Orchestra.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of CCM’s Musical Theatre program, which was the first BFA Musical Theatre program in the United States. The anniversary season kicks off on Sept. 16 with a Birthday Cabaret featuring nearly a dozen alumni who have performed on Broadway and beyond. The celebration continues with a pair of classic musicals from Broadway’s golden age: Guys and Dolls (Oct. 19-27) and Godspell (Nov. 8-10).

This fall’s lineup includes faculty and guest artist recitals, fully supported theatrical and dance productions, choral, piano and winds performances and much more! You can learn about CCM’s fall schedule of performing and media arts events by referring to the list below or picking up a Fall 2018 Calendar of Major Events at the CCM Box Office.

MUSICAL TEMPO AT THE CLOSE OF THE LONG 19th CENTURY
Leslie Blasius, University of Wisconsin
In a recent study, Roger Grant excavates the supercession of Renaissance mensuration by the measure in the concerted music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Key to this is an abstraction, the early-modern conception of measure as constituted a coordinated system of isynchronous pulses. Balancing this abstraction is the notion that the measure creates rhythmic characters, joining specific meters to specific tempi. For Grant, the inherent contradiction in this tempo giusto system reaches a point of crisis in the early 19th century, when the combinatorial possibilities for joining meter and tempo overwhelm the conventional list of rhythmic topoi. Thus a further abstraction, the introduction of naturalised time in the form of the metronome. We might extend Grant’s argument, noting that naturalised time in the 19th century is itself balanced by the performative time of the tempo rubato. This, Blasius argues, gives rise by the close of the century to a new phenomenology of tempo, one predicated on the possibilities of mutable tempi, on a distinction between notated tempo and perceived velocity, and on the limit-case of the Durchgang, the breakthrough in which tempo itself is dissolved.

Based on a Story and Characters by Damon Runyon
Music and Lyrics by Frank Loesser
Book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows

Roger Grodsky, musical director
Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, Guys and Dolls is the perfect musical comedy from Broadway’s “golden age” and 1950 season. Nathan Detroit is a gambler trying to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck. Meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they’ve been engaged for 14 years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler Sky Masterson for the dough, and Sky ends up chasing straight-laced missionary Sarah Brown as a result. Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafés of Havana, Cuba and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.

THE TURN OF THE SCREW
Music by Benjamin Britten
Libretto by Myfanwy Piper, after a story by Henry James
Aik Khai Pung, conductor

Based on Henry James’ classic ghost-story novella, Britten’s compelling chamber opera presents the story of a governess charged with the care of two orphaned children at their absentee uncle’s country estate, where the ghosts of a former valet and his lover haunt the grounds. With a blend of arresting motifs and stirring lyricism, the action moves with incredible fluidity, creating a chilling tale of sexual repression and the corruption of innocence. For mature audiences.

POSTVILLE: HOMETOWN TO THE WORLD
Music by Laura Kaminsky
Libretto by Kimberly Reed

Postville: Hometown to the World
is the latest piece by composer Laura Kaminsky and filmmaker Kimberly Reed, known for their partnership on the critically acclaimed opera As One, concerning the journey of a transgender person, which was featured in Cincinnati Opera’s 2018 Summer Festival. Their new work takes place in Postville, Iowa, which bills itself as the “Hometown to the World,” but which is known for a massive 2008 raid by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency at a Kosher meat-packing plant, in which over a tenth of the town’s population was arrested and deported. This new work was created for the “Opera for All Voices” program, which is led by Santa Fe Opera and San Francisco Opera, and includes the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Minnesota Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Sarasota Opera and Seattle Opera. It is Kaminsky and Reed’s second work to participate in Opera Fusion: New Works, following their opera Some Light Emerges, which had a short residency in September 2016.
