Crime Trend Update

CSR NIBRS Offenses

  • YTD: Decreasing in both Property and Society Offenses Slight increase in Person Offenses
  • 5 Year Average: Slight increase in Property Offenses Decreasing in both Person and Society Offenses

NIBRS Offenses: Society

  • Society offenses are decreasing in both the YTD and 5 year average time frame
  • Our largest increase is only 3 in drug/narcotic violations. These are typically students smoking marijuana in the dorms. Even though it is now legal in Ohio it is still against University Policy
  • Increase in 1 in weapon Law Violations... this was an instance of discharging a firearm off of a balcony at the Eden (UC 25 0351)

CSR NIBRS Offenses: Person

  • Our person offenses were increasing in YTD (7%) but decreasing by 5% compared to the 5 year average...
  • Our Robbery numbers are increasing by 1. We had an alert go out this past weekend on Short Vine … follow up later in the presentation? Defer to Dudley?
  • Our simple assaults account for our largest increase... keep in mind last year we had 20 which is lower compared to the other years and we sit at 34 currently. Most of these instances involve fighting of some kind, some are bar/ alcohol related fights while others are verbal disputes that escalate to fights .

CSR NIBRS Offenses: Property

  • We have small increases but then we have a glaring increase of 50 in our shoplifting category.
  • 43 of the 80 are from Target who has a new loss prevention manager who has been reporting many shoplifting reports.
    • We do not believe this is a new problem that is occurring at Target, but it should be attributed more to a new person working at Target making the reports.

CSR NIBRS Offenses: Robbery

  • We have an increase of 1 YTD and are decreasing by 16% compared to the 3-year average

Current Events/Community Engagement

Director Eliot Isaac

  • On January 12th, a fire alarm was received from a dining area in the Tangeman University Center. As officers were assured everyone had safely exited the building, a staff member told them his 6-year-old son was with him at work, but could not be found. Officers called the child’s name and description into dispatch to start more officers to the building to help search. UC Emergency Communications alerted the Cincinnati Police of the missing child, and they joined in the search.
    • Emergency Communications Dispatcher Kylee Beccaccio contacted Lt Bill Richey to tell him that she had a Rave Alert ready to send to the campus community and he agreed it should be sent. ECD Beccaccio sent the alert, which was sent to all students via text, neighboring businesses who are part of our “neighbors” alerts, campus digital signage, housing cable TV, and social media.
    • Within 20 minutes, the child was located and reunited with his father. The Rave Alert helped aid in the rapid locating of the missing child.
  • Inaugural UCPD 3v3 Scholarship Classic! This event not only connected us to our community but also reinforced our mission. $1000 scholarship for each member of the winning team
