Hot Work Permit

Hot Work Permit Policy

  1. Permit Requests: all Initial requests must be submitted at least 72 hours in advance not to include Saturday or Sunday or a University of Cincinnati holiday.
  2. Permit Duration: Hot Work permits are valid for a maximum of 24 hours. For work extending beyond this period, a new permit must be obtained daily until completion.
  3. Regulatory Compliance: All hot work activities must comply with NFPA 51B and the Ohio Fire Code, Chapter 35 and OSHA 1917.152.
  4. Emergency requests: will be evaluated at the discretion of the Fire Prevention Division call 513-556-1111.
  5. Permit Authorization: Public safety reserves the right to revoke or terminate permits if safety standards are not met.
  6. Work Location: Whenever feasible, hot work shall be relocated outdoors.
  7. A means of egress should be always maintained 
  8. Permit Authorizing Individual: Permits may be authorized by University of Cincinnati facility management team responsible for the job site, permits are required to be sent to Fire Prevention daily. The work being conducted cannot impair fire protection systems. If fire protection systems are affected Fire Prevention must be contacted 72 hours in advance of the permit.
  9. Emergency permit authorization: any unexpected or abnormal situation that arises in a workplace, which could potentially cause damage to property or substantial impact to the continuity of business.

Post visible warning signs stating: “CAUTION: HOT WORK IN PROGRESS – STAY CLEAR.”

Hot Work Precautions

  • Remove or shield all combustible materials in the work area for a 35-foot clearance
  • Seal openings in walls, floors, ducts, or shafts to prevent sparks from spreading.
  • Do not perform hot work on containers or equipment that have held flammable substances until they are cleaned, inerted, or purged.

Automatic Fire Protection

Take approved measures to prevent accidental activation of fire detection systems.

Fire Safety Training

Fire extinguisher training is available for your viewing on the University of Cincinnati Public Safety website.

Contractors must provide proof of fire safety and extinguisher training upon request.

Fire Watch

  • Maintain a fire watch during hot work and for at least 60 continuous minutes after completion, including breaks when the area is unattended.
  • Fire watch personnel must monitor the entire hot work area and have extinguishing equipment readily available. Report all incidents immediately to 513-556-1111/ 911.

Fire Extinguishers

  • At least one portable extinguisher with a minimum 2-A:20-B:C rating must be accessible within 30 feet of the hot work location.
  • All extinguishers must comply with NFPA 10 and Ohio Fire Code standards.
