Badminton

Any intramural policies not mentioned here may be found in the intramural handbook.  Unless specifically mentioned below, Intramural play is governed by National Badminton League rules. By participating in intramural sports, the participant agrees to abide by all intramural rules and policies.

You may suffer physical and/or mental injury from participating in Intramural Sports. There are certain risks of injury that are inherent to participation in sports and recreational activities. These types of injuries may be minor or serious and may result from the actions or inactions of themselves or others. By choosing to participate in Intramural Sports, you do so at your own risk. It is understood that most activities require a certain level of fitness and health, and that each person has a different capacity for participating in these activities. Participants of Intramural Sports are highly encouraged to have a physical examination and procure health insurance prior to play. UC Campus Recreation does not provide health insurance.

Intramural Supervisors undergo concussion recognition training. In the instance a participant is exhibiting any signs or symptoms of a concussion as a result of a head injury sustained during intramural play, he or she will be removed from the activity. This individual must provide a physician’s note clearing the individual to play by a specific date. This note may be emailed to intramural@uc.edu.

2.1

There will be no jersey requirements for teams

2.2

Badminton rackets are to be provided by the player. Campus Rec rackets are limited, and are available on a first come - first serve basis.

3.1

Prior to registration close, a team must have at least one player confirmed on its IMLeagues roster. Teams that fail to do so may not be included in the league.

3.2

Teams may have up to one (1) player on its roster.

3.3

Teams are permitted one (1) checked-in coach on the bench. 

4.1

A match will consist of the best two (2) out of three (3) sets. The third set will only be played if necessary. All three (3) sets will be played to 21 points, win by two (2). 

4.2

There are no timeouts, but there is a 30-second interval once the leading scorer reaches eleven (11) points in each set

4.3

The checked-in participant and coach has the authority to call timeouts on behalf of their team. These timeouts can only be called during stoppage in play.

4.4

Teams that arrive late to games and/or are not ready with the minimum roster by start time will receive the following penalty:

4.4.1

1-4 minutes late = Other team starts up 5-0 and gets first serve

4.4.2

5-9 minutes late = Other team starts up 10-0 and gets first serve

4.4.3

10+ minutes late = Game is forfeited.

4.5

Teams that forfeit must pay a $20 non-refundable reinstatement fee prior to the end of the regular season to be eligible for playoff consideration [Refer to Section XII of the Intramural Handbook for more information]

4.6

In order to prevent forfeits, teams may also default once per season. Teams must give a minimum 48 hour notice of default to qualify by emailing intramural@uc.edu. [Refer to Section XII of the Intramural Handbook for more information]

5.1

Teams must win by two (2) points to win the set [Exception Section 5.1.1]

5.1.1

Sets are capped to 30 points, making the first team to reach 30 points declared the set winner

6.1

The Captains will hold a pre-match Rock, Paper, Scissors. The winner will receive first serve

6.1.1

In playoffs, the higher seed will receive first serve

6.2

Scoring shall be rally scoring

6.3

When the server's score is even, they will serve from the right service court. When the server's score is odd, they will serve from the left service court. 

6.4

Any points that are unable to be agreed upon by the teams and/or Intramural staff will result in a replay

7.1

The player that wins the previous set serves first in the following set

7.2

The serve may not have prolonged contact with the racket

7.3

The following shall be considered faults:

7.3.1

The service point of contact is higher than the server's waist

7.3.2

The shuttle fails to land in the correct service court

7.3.3

The server steps forward or makes contact with the line as they are serving 

7.3.4

A player balks his opponent during or before the serve

7.3.5

A player touches the net or its supports with their body or racket

7.3.6

A player contacts the shuttle on the opponent's side of the net

7.3.7

The shuttle is hit twice in succession by a player

7.4

It is not considered a fault if a player fails to make contact on a serve
