Brooke's UHP Journey
Brooke Bartholomew identifies two common threads in all her UHP experiences: her passion for medicine, and her interest in travel and cultural exchange. While she’s also completed an honors seminar on The Happiness of Pursuit, an honors writing course, and a stint as a Learning Assistant, Bartholomew looks back on her travels—first to Tanzania, and then to Germany for a UHP study tour—as pivotal to her personal and professional development.
In the Germany study tour, a seminar called Democratizing Healthcare, Bartholomew felt a strong connection to her Biological Sciences major and her eventual goal of becoming a physician. As her class toured a labor and delivery ward and “met with midwife students to discuss our experiences,” Bartholomew reflected on the importance and challenges of offering effective preventative medicine. “With an open mind and global perspective,” she says, “you will be more understanding and sympathetic to patients as well as offering higher quality care.”
Bartholomew describes her UHP experiences as the preparation she needed to apply to medical school by “making me a more well-rounded individual” and giving her the tools she needed to persevere through past and future challenges.
