Kamaryn's UHP Journey

When Kamaryn Madry started her UHP journey in her first semester on UC’s campus, she was struck by the program’s holistic focus: “encouraging curious, engaged, globally minded people.” Madry’s honors experiences have spanned all three of those qualities, from a summer study-abroad experience in Munich, to collaborative production work on a fellow CCM student’s capstone film that earned her a Student Emmy award.

When Madry looks back on her time with the UHP, she cites her summer in Munich and her semester rolling dice and telling a shared story through D&D in Tales of Resilience as having had the greatest impact on her. In both cases, Madry went in uncertain, and discovered that the risk paid off, not just in terms of skills and relationships but in an enduring mindset: “If I could make it this far, I could try one more new thing.” Getting comfortable with uncertainty introduced her to a fast-paced radio production environment, a new language, and, at the games table, to a practice of “thinking in a more imaginative and improvisational way than I had before.”

Madry is the first to admit that, in her demanding course of study, “it sometimes feels like I live in my college’s bubble”; the UHP “opened doors to events, people, and opportunities I might never have discovered on my own.” While she’s still in the process of figuring out what comes next, Madry is confident that she’s equipped to face, and ultimately to thrive in, this form of uncertainty, as she has in so many others.
