Matt's UHP Journey
Matt Mone joined the UHP in his third year in UC’s Biomedical Engineering program, looking for opportunities to practice reflection and personal growth alongside his demanding major requirements and an intense series of co-op rotations.
When he designed an Honors Experience around attending the 2023 Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Conference in Seattle, Mone found just such an opportunity. Mone pioneered a collaboration between faculty, undergraduate research, and his fellow BMES executives. At the conference itself, he connected with industry professionals, highlighted the accomplishments of his fellow undergraduate researchers, and gained a new understanding of global trends and advancements in biomedical engineering.
Mone’s UHP journey has also included self-designed Honors Experiences involving peer tutoring and futures work, as well as the Pinball Design & Programming honors seminar and participation in UC’s Innovation Challenge. For him, the common thread is an exploration of “the intersection of technical expertise and strategic leadership”—a direction that led Mone to explore the human-centered aspects of the biomedical engineering industry with increasing interest. Of his time in the UHP, Mone reflects: “with a committed mindset, I can navigate any obstacle.”
