My UHP experience in five words
Inspiring, Challenging, Collaborative, Reflective, Motivating
Why UHP is for me
The University Honors Program (UHP) is for me because it aligns with my desire to grow both academically and personally through meaningful experiences. I’m drawn to the global awareness and community engagement within the program that resonates with my future goals in healthcare and service. UHP gives me the opportunity to challenge myself beyond the classroom through research and leadership, while also surrounding me with a supportive and driven community. Whether it’s exploring medical research or contributing to local initiatives, the Honors Program allows me to make a great impact while leading with purpose.
The honors experience that made the biggest impact on me
The honors research experience that had the biggest impact on me was working in a cardiovascular lab studying cell-free DNA in heart failure. This opportunity deepened my understanding of cardiovascular medicine, a field I am very interested in. I learned to use advanced techniques like flow cytometry and worked closely with mentors who challenged me to think critically. Beyond technical skills, this experience strengthened my confidence, patience, and perseverance especially when results were unexpected or experiments had to be repeated. It reminded me that research is not just about finding answers but about being open to discovery. This project has inspired me to participate in future clinical research opportunities in my medical career.
If I could go back in time and give myself one piece of advice
If I could go back in time, I would tell myself to not be afraid to step outside of my comfort zone because growth happens when you start trying new things. During my first semester, I hesitated to dive into unfamiliar opportunities, unsure if I was ready. I now realize that UHP is designed to support exploration as you move along your undergraduate journey, Whether it’s joining a research project, applying for a study abroad program, or speaking up in an Honors seminar, the earlier you start, the more you’ll gain.
What I'm most looking forward to this year
This year, I’m most looking forward to deepening my involvement in research and expanding my impact through service and leadership. I’m excited to continue my cardiovascular research and possibly present my findings, which would be a milestone in my academic journey. I’m also looking forward to leading initiatives through organizations like UNICEF at UC, where I can help raise awareness about global health issues and engage the campus community. Additionally, I hope to participate in a study abroad or experiential learning opportunity that pushes me to grow culturally and intellectually. Most of all, I’m excited to keep challenging myself—academically, personally, and professionally—while being surrounded by a community of curious, driven peers in the UHP.
