My UHP experience in five words

Inspiring, Supportive, Engaging, Meaningful, Growth

Why UHP is for me

The University Honors Program is for me because it pushes me to grow beyond academics through leadership, service, and reflection. As a Supplemental Instruction Leader and now an SI Coordinator, I’ve learned how to support and mentor students, build community, and develop leadership and communication skills. UHP has also given me opportunities to serve as a Welcome Event Mentor and Ambassador, where I’ve helped new students feel connected and represented the program’s values. Each of these roles has challenged me to think critically, collaborate with diverse groups, and make a positive impact on campus. UHP gives me the space to reflect on these experiences, align them with my passions, and push myself to keep growing as a student, leader, and global citizen.

The honors experience that made the biggest impact on me

One of the honors experiences that has had the biggest impact on me is serving as a Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader. This role pushed me outside my comfort zone, helping me grow both personally and professionally. Leading weekly study sessions taught me how to communicate complex ideas clearly, adapt to different learning styles, and create an inclusive environment where every student felt supported. It strengthened my confidence in public speaking, leadership, and time management - skills I now carry into other areas of my life. More importantly, being an SI Leader showed me the value of mentorship and community, as I was able to witness students gain confidence and succeed through collaborative learning. This experience not only deepened my understanding of course material but also shaped how I see myself as a leader who can make a positive impact on others.

If I could go back in time and give myself one piece of advice

If I could go back in time, I would tell myself to trust my ability to take on new opportunities and not be afraid to get involved early. In my first semester, I was hesitant, unsure if I could balance academics with leadership roles. Since then, becoming a Supplemental Instruction Leader has shown me that I’m capable of managing multiple responsibilities while making a meaningful impact. This role has strengthened my confidence, communication, and leadership skills. Because of what I’ve learned and achieved so far, I now feel ready and excited to serve as a Welcome Event Mentor, UHP Ambassador, and SI Coordinator. I would remind my past self that stepping up to new challenges leads to personal growth, and that I’m more resilient and capable than I once believed.

What I'm most looking forward to this year

This year, I’m most looking forward to taking on a full course load while being actively involved in three different leadership roles on campus. I’m excited to challenge myself academically and continue growing through these opportunities, while also making time to relax and have fun with friends. Balancing academics, involvement, and personal life is something I’m really proud of, and I’m looking forward to seeing how much I can accomplish while still enjoying the college experience.
