SPAN3070: Crime, Deviance, and Media in Latin America

Description

This course examines the history and cultural representation of crime, deviance, and political violence in Latin America. Focusing on fictional representations and factual accounts of organized crime in Latin America, students analyze how different manifestations of violence intercept national identity, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, and religious beliefs. Students will reflect on the exaltation of criminal organizations, the glorification of drug lords, and the misrepresentation of contemporary Latin American societies in film and media. Students will study successful crime prevention and social inclusion practices through urban upgrading and environmental design. The course will be taught in English. The course includes a study tour to Colombia.
